Here is some new music, fresh out of the oven, and recorded live at the Outpost 186 in Cambridge. Writing for a quintet with cello proved to be a... difficult but exciting experience, to be sure. I certainly plan on experimenting with this format in the future, but for now, please enjoy my original, "Steady Now."
Well, it is finally here! "Mythos" is a conglomeration of several of my musical influences including jazz, rock, folk, and even 20th century sprechstimme. I had a fantastic time in the studio recording with such talented band mates. I feel honored to have recorded with my friend and mentor George Garzone for the track entitled "Hugin and Munin." You can download and stream the music at the link below!
Here is a taste of some of the new compositions I've been churning out recently. This was played a few weeks ago at my recital at the Red Room. Later on this spring I will be releasing a record entitled "Mythos" that includes this piece and a few more originals. More to follow... but for now, here is "Antlers."
There are a couple exciting things happening in the next few months with my group and others! First off, on February 16 at 1pm in Berklee's Red Room, my quartet will be presenting a collection of my compositions entitled "Mythos." These compositions were inspired by characters and themes I've been attracted to in mythology and folklore from around the world. I'm fortunate to have my friend and mentor George Garzone join me for a song on this show as well! All are welcome to come listen!
Second, my friend and bandmate Magdalena Abrego is doing a recording session with her quartet in April, so stay tuned for the online release of that music as well. I'm so excited to play more of her compositions! Below is a video of her group from November 2015 playing an Ornette Coleman tune.
It's going to be a fun spring!
I feel so lucky to be a part of this year's Nancy Jazz Festival in France!!! I will be touring the Lorraine area with my friend and colleague Vid Jamnik in his 5tet. Stay tuned!!
Man, it is finally coming together! I'm so excited for the release of our duo album, Umbrella Pine. Last week Magdalena Abrego and I ventured to woodsy and beautiful Connecticut to record our first album together at Firehouse 12. After a few hours in the studio, we had a tangible representation of years spent composing and playing together. We're having a CD release party at the Outpost 186 in Cambridge on Saturday, September 12 at 8pm, where we'll be playing songs from the record as well as arrangements of music by St. Vincent and Ben Wendel. If you're in Boston, I hope to see you there! If you're elsewhere, stay tuned for the online release of the album for streaming and/or purchase. In the meantime, follow the hype at:
I'm in the process of creating a duo record with guitarist Magdalena Abrego. We'll be recording it in August and releasing it shortly after! Stay tuned!
Here are a few of my newest creations! I wrote "As It Sets" last summer, and just recently co-arranged a duo version of it with the ferociously talented Magdalena Abrego. Click below to give it a listen!
The song below is the first of a three piece suite of music based on mythology. The other two songs are in the making! "Out of Acrady" focuses on the story of Atalanta, who is a powerful female figure from the Greek tales.
It's so great being back home in Kansas City for a few weeks. Once again I am immersed in the jazz scene here and am reminded of the swing, the soul, and the tradition that defines the KC sound. I've been so fortunate to play a few gigs with some friends of mine who are also some of the best musicians on the scene. Click below to hear us live!
Come see me play with Kansas City's finest jazz musicians this Thursday, September 4 at the Kauffman Performing Arts Center! Stay tuned for new recordings as well!
